San Francisco crix hug ‘Tree of Life’

Org's actor nods go to Gary Oldman, Tilda Swinton

Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” received top honors for best picture and director Sunday from the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, which also awarded the Fox Searchlight release with its cinematography prize for d.p. Emmanuel Lubezki.

Gary Oldman drew the actor prize for his performance as British agent George Smiley in Focus Features’ “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” which also won a screenplay award from the S.F. critics for Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan’s adaptation. Tilda Swinton nabbed the actress laurels for her bad-mother turn in Oscilloscope Laboratories’ “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

Albert Brooks added to his growing stash of critics’ prizes with a supporting-actor citation for FilmDistrict’s “Drive,” while Vanessa Redgrave was crowned supporting actress for her work in the Weinstein Co.’s “Coriolanus.”

Original screenplay went to J.C. Chandor for “Margin Call,” a Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions release. Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy” (IFC) drew the foreign-language film nod, while Errol Morris’ “Tabloid” (IFC’s Sundance Selects) picked up the documentary award. Paramount’s “Rango” won the group’s animation prize.

The org presented a special citation for under-appreciated independent cinema to Lech Majewski’s “The Mill and the Cross,” while the National Film Preservation Foundation received the Marlon Riggs Award for courage and vision in the Bay Area film community.
