Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to action drama “Sacrifice” from director Chen Kaige (“Farewell My Concubine”) and will release it later this year.
“Sacrifice,” which is screening at the Cannes Market, debuted at the Berlin Film Festival where Peter Goldwyn, VP of Acquisitions, first saw it.
Story focuses on a power hungry general who wipes out his rival along with his entire family, save for one newborn. The infant is protected by the doctor who delivered him and raises him as his own, hoping to mold him into his own instrument of retribution.
Produced by Chen Hong and Qin Hong, the pic stars Ge You and Wang Xue Qi. It’s based on “Orphan of Zhao” by Ji Jun-Xiang and is set during the Yuan Dynasty.
“Sacrifice” has grossed more than $30 million in China since opening in December.
Goldwyn negotiated the deal with Gary Hamilton and Lina Marrone from Arclight Films’ specialty Asian label entitled Easternlight Films headed by Ying Ye Best.
