Roadside Attractions picks up ‘Future’

Company makes third Sundance pickup

Making its third Sundance pickup, Roadside Attractions has closed a deal for North American rights to Miranda July’s second directorial effort “The Future,” with a theatrical release planned for later this year.

Deal was negotiated by Roadside co-prexy Howard Coen and VP of acquisitions and business affairs Dustin Smith, along with UTA’s Rich Klubeck on behalf of the filmmakers. Lionsgate will handle all ancillary rights.

Pic, which bowed last Friday in the fest’s premiere section, had several companies vying for the film, including IFC Films, which distribbed July’s hit debut “Me and You and Everyone We Know.” While specific figures were not disclosed, sources say Roadside offered an aggressive P&A commitment to sweeten the deal.

The award is a part of the Sundance Institute Science-in-Film Initiative, from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “Another Earth” was selected as the winning film by a committee of film and science professionals “for its original use of subtly rendered scientific concept … to explore the themes of remorse and forgiveness.”
