‘Road’ actor joins ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Kodi Smit-McPhee added to cast of Carlo Carlei's adaptation

EXCLUSIVE: Kodi Smit-McPhee, the 14-year-old star of “The Road” and “Let Me In,” is in early negotiations to play Benvolio in Carlo Carlei’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

Hailee Steinfeld and Holly Hunter are set to play Juliet and her Nurse, respectively, while Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”) is onboard to play Juliet’s hot-tempered cousin Tybalt, as Variety first reported.

Benvolio is Romeo’s cousin who unsuccessfully tries to keep the peace between Tybalt and Mercutio, who has yet to be cast.

Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”) penned the script and will produce with former New Line execs Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky, as well as Gabriele Muccino.

Production is scheduled to start this summer in Italy.

Smit-McPhee next plays Robin Wright’s son in Ari Folman’s “The Congress” and will soon be heard voicing the lead role in Focus Features and LAIKA’s animated pic “ParaNorman.”

Thesp is repped by ICM and The Schiff Co.
