Ramsay, Bier films vie for Euro prize

EFA longlist includes 'King's Speech,' 'Skin I Live In'

Lynne Ramsay’s chilling family drama “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” Yasemin Samdereli’s German box office hit “Almanya,” Agusti Villaronga’s post-war tale “Black Bread” and Tom Hooper’s Oscar-winning “The King’s Speech” are among 45 films on the European Film Academy’s longlist of titles recommended for European Film Award nominations.

The academy’s 2,500 members will vote on the noms in the coming weeks.

Hailing from 32 countries, the widely diverse candidates include high-profile pics as well as modest works and little-seen films. They include Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winner “In a Better World,” Celine Sciamma’s French drama “Tomboy,” Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In,” Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s “The Kid With a Bike” and Andreas Prochaska’s Austrian box office hit “The Unintentional Kidnapping of Elfriede Ott.”

Further candidates include Andreas Dresen’s emotionally intense German drama “Stopped on Track,” the story of a terminally ill man’s last months; Nanni Moretti’s “We Have a Pope,” about a new Vatican topper plagued by anxiety; Aki Kaurismaki’s “Le Havre,” in which a shoeshiner finds redemption helping an African stowaway in the French city; and Hungarian helmer Bela Tarr’s “The Turin Horse,” a black-and-white yarn about an aging cart driver and his unfortunate horse.

Pics are chosen by the 20 countries with the most EFA members, which vote one national film directly into the selection list, while a special committee adds films from smaller countries. This year’s selection committee consists of EFA board members as well as invited experts Pierre-Henri Deleau (France), Marit Kapla (Sweden), Stefan Kitanov (Bulgaria), Derek Malcolm (U.K.) and Elma Tataragic (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

The EFA will announce the noms on Nov. 5 at the Seville European Film Festival in Spain. The 24th European Film Awards will take place Dec. 3 in Berlin .
