German regional subsidy org Filmstiftung NRW is to back the Tom Tykwer/Wachowski siblings’ film “Cloud Atlas” with €1 million ($1.4 million). This is the seventh film it has supported from the German director and adds to the $2.1 million previously announced from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg in May.

Total budget for the pic is $100 million.

Pic — starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Ben Whishaw and Susan Sarandon — begins shooting at the end of the summer with the bulk of the photography set for Studio Babelsberg in Berlin. The release is expected for late 2012.

X-Filme Creative Pool and Cloud Atlas Filmproduction will produce in Germany with X-Filme taking German distribution rights. Warner Bros. will release the pic in North America and Focus Feature is handling international sales.
