Levy directing ‘Fantastic Voyage’ for Fox

James Cameron is producing the sci-fi tentpole

Continuing his shift from family laffers to more action-heavy tentpoles, 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy has signed on to direct the James Cameron-produced “Fantastic Voyage” for 20th Century Fox.

Levy and “Avatar” exec producer Laeta Kalogridis are doing a significant rewrite of a script penned by “Shaft” scribe Shane Salerno.

Reapproach for “Voyage” will include focusing on the pic’s love story and making the action less CG-reliant.

Script will be in development for at least another two months before the project’s up for greenlight.

“Voyage” is the third in a trio of tone-shifting projects for Levy, who found success with family comedies including “Just Married,” “Night at the Museum” and “The Pink Panther.” “Voyage” joins “Deadliest Warrior” and an untitled Carlton Cuse-penned actioner among his most recent tentpole projects.

Cuse project, which Levy is set to both produce and direct, has Hugh Jackman attached to star. The pair recently wrapped “Real Steel,” skedded for release in October, earlier than expected.
