Kristen Stewart is in negotiations to star as Snow White in Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

Stewart will join Viggo Mortensen who, as Variety first reported, is in talks to play the huntsman in the original retelling of the classic fairy tale. Stewart’s possible involvement was vaguely rumored at the time, but talks weren’t confirmed until late Wednesday.

Pic revolves around the relationship between Snow White and the man who is ordered to kill her by the evil queen.

In this version, the huntsman becomes a protector and mentor to the girl as they try to escape the queen. Charlize Theron is in talks to play the queen.

Pic will be directed by Rupert Sanders, with Evan Daugherty penning the script and Joe Roth producing.

Project has become a top priority for U since the studio won a bidding war on the spec in the fall. It’s set to go into production this summer with a Dec. 21, 2012, release date.

It’s one of a handful of “Snow White” projects in the works, including Relativity’s “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White” with Tarsem Singh directing and Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven.”

Stewart can be seen next in Walter Salles’ “On the Road” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.”

Stewart is repped by Gersh and McKuin Frankel and Whitehead.
