In time for busy Sundance buying, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has tapped former Relativity Media exec Joe Matukewicz as senior veep of acquisitions.

Move was announced Monday by SPWA prexy Steven Bersch, to whom Matukewicz will report.

At Relativity, Matukewicz served as senior veep and head of worldwide acquisitions — a post he took on in January, most recently having been involved with the studio’s Navy Seals actioner “Act of Valor.” In the new gig for SPWA, Matukewicz will oversee all acquisitions.

“We are thrilled to have Joe join us in this key role,” Bersch said. “His experience and taste will be vital as we continue to increasingly ramp up our acquisitions activities, and work to bring more great product into Sony.”

Bersch was hired as SPWA prexy in 2008 by former Sony head of worldwide affairs Peter Schlessel, who left last fall to run FilmDistrict. Matukewicz will replace Scott Schooman and Lia Buman, who held VP positions until their departure from Sony in July.

SPWA saw box office success earlier this year with inexpensive wide releases, including “Soul Surfer,” “Insidious” (distribbed via FilmDistrict), “Jumping the Broom” and “Courageous.”

Prior to joining Relativity, Matukewicz worked for Paramount Vantage in acquisitions.
