LONDON — Bollywood thrush Asha Bhosle, the 77-year-old Indian playback singer who has sung more than 12,000 Hindi songs plus many others in different languages, is set to take the lead in “Maaee” (Mother).
Bhosle will play a woman abandoned by her only son who makes a new life with her daughter and son-in-law. Padmini Kolhapure will play the daughter.
Marathi-language pic, which begins principal photography in April, is written and directed by debutant Mahesh Kodiyal and is produced by Subhash Dawar of Alliance Entertainment and Nitin Shankar of Rhythm D’vine Entertainment.
Apart from being one of Indian cinema’s most recognized singing voices, Bhosle has had a varied international career, recording with Boy George, Michael Stipe, Code Red and the Kronos Quartet among others. The Black Eyed Peas and Sarah Brightman have sampled her songs.
In 2000, Bhosle received the Dadasaheb Phalke award, India’s highest film honor.
As a child, Bhosle acted in the Marathi-language films “Te maze baal” and “Badi maa.”
