Henry Winkler joins Kevin James in ‘Boom’

Sony action-comedy set for summer, 2012

Henry Winkler is set to star opposite Kevin James in Sony’s action-comedy “Here Comes the Boom.”

Pic will be helmed by Frank Coraci, with James and Todd Garner producing. Aimee Keen is co-producing.

“Boom,” written by James and Allan Loeb, will begin production in late March, with a release date set for July 27, 2012. Story centers on a teacher who moonlights as a mixed martial arts fighter in order to save his school’s music program.

James is producing “Boom” through his Hey Eddie banner, while Garner will shepherd through Broken Road. Jeff Sussman and Marty Ewing will serve as exec producers. “Boom” is being co-financed by Columbia Pictures and MGM.

Winkler has most recently seen in Cartoon Network’s “Childrens Hospital” and USA Network’s “Royal Pains.” He and writing partner Lin Oliver also completed a novel in the “Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever” series and just finished the first novel of a new series for Scholastic, “Ghost Buddy.”

Winkler recently received the Order of the British Empire Award in recognition of his work with British children with learning challenges. He’s represented by ICM and Principato-Young.
