Tom Hanks is attached to star in Columbia Picture’s treatment of the real-life story about a seaman captured by Somali pirates in 2009.
Thesp will play Capt. Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama, who after offering himself as hostage to save his crew, was saved in a high-seas rescue by the U.S. Navy. Story earned worldwide headlines and Sony was quick to nab rights not long after the spring event.
Billy Ray (“Hunger Games”) has been tapped to pen the script, with Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, Scott Rudin and Kevin Spacey producing.
Hanks next stars alongside Julia Roberts in Universal’s “Larry Crowne” set to bow July 1. He’s currently lensing helmer Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer-penned tome, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” from a script by Eric Roth.
