Hong Kong’s We Distribution has announced a raft of deals for “The Guillotines,” the $15-milllion actioner helmed by “Infernal Affairs” director Andrew Lau and produced by Peter Ho-sun Chan.
Pic started lensing in September and made its sales bow at AFM. “The Guillotines” sold to Well Go USA in North America, Splendid Films in Germany and the Benelux, and Icon Film Distribution in Australia/New Zealand. Pic is a co-production between Chan’s We Pictures and Media Asia. Other partners include Stellar Mega Films Limited, Dingsheng Cultural Industry Investment and Polyface Films.
Media Asia will do sales in Asia (excluding China), while Chan’s sales outfit We Distribution will handle international sales. Movie is slated for a 2012 release. Set in the Ming Dynasty, pic follows a group of street urchins trained to be part of an undercover group of assassins using a guillotine. Chan changed the name to “The Guillotines” to avoid similarities with the 1974 Shaw Brothers movie “The Flying Guillotine.”
Pic features Huang Xiaoming from “Ip Man 2” and “The Message,” Ethan Juan, who won best actor at the Taiwanese Golden Horse Awards for “Monga,” and Shawn Yue from “Reign of Assassins” and “Infernal Affairs II,” as well as Boran Jing (“Hot Summer Days”).
