Friday B.O.: ‘Lion’ sweeps tonight

Holdovers 'Lion King,' 'Dolphin Tale' and 'Moneyball' holding off new releases

None of this weekend’s new releases are shaping up to earn the top spot at the box office this weekend, with “Lion King 3D” and “Dolphin Tale” duking it out for top billing.

Disney’s stereoscopic toon looks like it’ll earn somewhere just north of $15 million for its third frame, while Warner Bros.’ “Dolphin Tale’s” projections hover somewhere around $14 million.

Sony’s “Moneyball” will likely take in the #3 spot with $12.5 million, followed by “Courageous,” which could do $10 million for the weekend based on estimates of a $3 to $5 million Friday gross.

Box office observers predict that Summit’s “50/50” will come in next at a $9 million three-day tally and $3 million Friday take.

U’s “Dreamhouse” looks to follow at just north of $3 million for Friday and $8.5 to $9 million for the weekend.

20th Century Fox’s “What’s Your Number” may slightly disappoint, with a projection of $8 million this weekend, although that number may pop with nighttime under-25 female auds.
