TORONTO — Filmswelike has nabbed Canadian distribution rights to “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye” on the eve of its Canuck preem Wednesday at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto.

The Toronto-based distributor will open the film in October.

Gallic, Gotham-based experimental filmmaker Marie Losier tracked pioneering performance artist Genesis P-Orridge and wife Lady Jaye over seven years of gender transformation for their “Pandrogyne” art project. Pic won the Teddy and Caligari awards in Berlin in February and screened at SXSW, Tribeca and the Buenos Aires Festival of Independent Film, where it won the audience award last month.

“More than a portrait of two artists, the film is an epic love story that is emotionally arresting and we’re thrilled to bring it to Canadian audiences,” said filmswelike’s Ron Mann.

The distributor picked up Canadian rights to Hot Docs pic “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” on Friday.
