Diego Boneta to star in ‘Rock of Ages’

New Line taps Mexican actor-singer for musical

Producers of New Line’s “Rock of Ages” have signed Mexican actor-singer Diego Boneta for the lead role of aspiring rocker Drew Boley.

New Line closed the deal Monday to cast Boneta, whose TV credits include “90210” and “Pretty Little Liars” along with the Mexican soap opera “Rebelde.” He’s been recording as a singer over the last six years, starting with the single “Responde.”

“Hairspray” helmer Adam Shankman, who is directing and choreographing “Rock of Ages,” told Variety that Boneta “walked in and absolutely fit the part like Zac Efron in ‘Hairspray’ and Channing Tatum in ‘Step Up.’ ”

“Rock of Ages” started firming up its cast in recent weeks with “Dancing With the Stars” champ Julianne Hough set as female lead. Tom Cruise and Mary J. Blige have also been cast in the pic, which begins lensing May 19 in Florida.

It focuses on a couple who meet at the Sunset Strip club Rock of Ages, fall in love and try to stay together while living the rock life.The musical’s creator, Chris D’Arienzo, scripted the adaptation, and Shankman and Justin Theroux (“Tropic Thunder”) are polishing the script. Carl Levin, Matt Weaver, Scott Prisand, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot will produce. Garrett Grant, Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver exec produce.
