‘Dawn’ breaks on $500 million mark

'Tintin' also racks up offshore B.O.

Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1” pushed past the $500 million global mark on Nov. 29, thanks to a whopping $76 million second-week take over Nov. 25-27. Stateside cume stands at $226 million.

Through the weekend, “Breaking Dawn” had totaled $277 million in overseas grosses (pic’s updated international mid-week tally wasn’t available). That puts the penultimate “Twilight” pic impressively north of the franchise originator, which collected approximately $200 million internationally in its run.

The second “Twilight” pic, “New Moon,” grossed $416 million offshore in 2009; “Eclipse,” the third entry, did around $400 million last year.

Germany was the only major debut market for “Breaking Dawn,” which earned a No. 1 ranking there of $10.8 million, putting it ahead of summer tentpoles “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “Eclipse” — but without the benefit of local school holidays. German cume for “Breaking Dawn” is $13.6 million, including previews.

Despite a sizeable 68% drop in Blighty, the film still held on to the market’s No. 1 spot with $7 million, bringing its local cume to an outstanding $36.4 million. In Russia, “Breaking Dawn” took $6.24 million with a cume of $27 million. The film also saw strong repeat perfs in France, where it scored $6.1 million and reached a $23 million cume; and Australia, scoring $4.8 million and a $19 million cume.

“The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” crossed the $200 million milestone internationally — a significant benchmark considering the film doesn’t open domestically until Dec. 21.

Paramount and Sony divvied up international rights, with Par totaling $46 million from all English-speaking territories and Asia, except India. France — a Sony territory — ranks as “Tintin’s” top market, with $51.8 million.
