Wide scores with ‘Mill and the Cross’

Majewski pic sells to Germany, Australia

Paris– Rolling off the European Film Market, Paris-based Wide Management has closed a string of new deals on Lech Majewski’s “The Mill and the Cross.”

An adaptation of Pieter Bruegel’s epic masterpiece “The Procession to Calvary,” the 1564-set pic was sold to Berlin-based Neue Visionen Filmverleih for Germany and Austria.

Meanwhile, Aviva Kipen, one of the toppers of the Jewish Film Festival in Australia, will create a label to distribute the film in Australia and New Zealand.

“As in Bruegel’s painting, this film is a psychological drama, which subtly raises contemporary issues of freedom of religion,” said Kipen.

“I think the theology of the painting can speak to all of us.”

Toplining Rutger Hauer, Michael York and Charlotte Rampling, “The Mill and the Cross” bowed at Sundance in the New Frontier sidebar.

Deals follow a raft of sales to Kino Lorber for the U.S. and Joint Entertainment for Taiwan.

Clementine Hugot, international sales manager at Wide Management, said the film had also been picked up in Spain, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Goran Hugo Olsson’s Panorama player “The Black Power Mixtape:

1967-1975,” repped by the shingle’s documentary label, Wide House, was nabbed by Stuttgart-based Mouna for Germany and Austria, as well as Sundance Selects for the U.S.
