‘Scialla!’ gets Venice berth

Pic marks Francesco Bruni's helming debut

The Venice Film Festival’s Controcampo Italiano section, dedicated to new trends in Italian cinema, will open with “Scialla!” (Chill), scribe Francesco Bruni’s directorial debut.

“Scialla!” is a Rome-set coming-of-ager produced by Beppe Caschetto with RAI Cinema, which will distribute in Italy.

Pic stars Fabrizio Bentivoglio (“The Family Friend”), Barbora Bobulova (“Coco Chanel”) and young first-time actor Filippo Scicchitano.

Bruni and helmer Paolo Virzi wrote the script for “The First Beautiful Thing,” Italy’s 2011 foreign-language Oscar contender.

Maria Grazia Cucinotta’s short, “Il Maestro,” will unspool on the Lido alongside “Scialla!” on Sept. 2, marking the helming debut of the “Il Postino” thesp.

Cucinotta’s short is centered around a teacher, inspired by her grandfather.

Separately, Venice has announced that this year’s retro will be dedicated to Italian experimental cinema of the 1960s and 1970s.

Titled “Orizzonti 1961-1978,” the retro is linked to its revamped Orizzonti (Horizons) section, which aims for a more multidisciplinary approach, looking at how conventional film and contemporary visual arts can intersect.

Retro comprises experimental works by Carmelo Bene, Mario Schifano and Alberto Grifi. It includes a restored version of Grifi and Massimo Sarchinelli’s “Anna,” about a pregnant underage girl, which was among the first works shot on video and unspooled in Venice in 1975.

Fest runs Aug. 31-Sept. 10.
