After launching a joint film fund in 2009, the Italian and Brazilian film industries have announced four co-productions between the two countries, including new projects by a pair of auteurs who are known on the fest circuit: Italy’s Giorgio Diritti and Brazil’s Paulo Caldas.

Giorgio Diritti, whose “L’Uomo che verra” (The Man Who Will Come) made a splash last year, will helm the Amazon rainforest-set “Vanita delle vanita” (Vanity of Vanities).

“It’s inspired by thoughts about men who might be very technological, but have these strong biological roots that first and foremost make them part of the Earth,” Diritti said, speaking at Cannes’ Italian pavilion.

Pic is being mounted, as a three-way co-production, also with France, through Diritti’s Bologna-based Arancia Film shingle.

Paulo Caldas (“Happy Desert”) is prepping “Rossellini amou a pensao de dona bombom,” about Roberto Rossellini making a movie in Brazil in the 1950s, through 99 Producoes Artistica.

“Italian culture has always had a strong influence on Brazilian cinema; so it’s great that we are now making movies together,” said Alberto Flaksman, head of international affairs at Brazil’s Agencia Nacional de Cinema (ANCINE).

The other two projects tapping into the fund are by first-time helmers: “Cavalli Marini,” about a Brazilian transsexual’s rapport with his family, by Francesco Constabile; and “La Mamma,” about two women — one living in Brazil, the other in Italy — whose lives intersect.

The fund was launched in 2009 by Italy’s culture ministry and the Centro Sperimentale film school, and Brazil’s ANCINE.
