LONDON — International film sales and financing powerhouse Fortissimo Films has acquired worldwide rights, excluding certain territories, to Slovenian war drama “Silent Sonata,” which will bow at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

The pic, which was written and directed by Janez Burger, is set in no man’s land during the Balkan War, and looks at how folk deal with the horrors of war.

“(The film) combines a fairytale sensibility with the bizarre and exotic, using unexpected cinematic language,” Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner said. Fortissimo, which also screens the pic at the European Film Market in Berlin in February, will handle sales outside Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Finland and the former Yugoslavia.

The pic is the third feature from Burger following “Idle Running” in 1999 and “Ruins” in 2004, both of which screened at Rotterdam.

Pic was produced by Jozko Rutar for Staragara Prod. and Morgan Bushe for Fastnet Film, and toplines Croatian actor Leon Lucev (“Grbavica,” “Witnesses”).
