Busan fest to honor Tsui Hark

Helmer to be named Asian filmmaker of the year

Hong Kong helmer Tsui Hark will receive the Asian Filmmaker of the Year kudos at the 16th Busan Film Festival.

The director, best known for “A Chinese Ghost Story,” “The Swordsman” and “Seven Swords,” is being given the award because he “established Hong Kong film in the global market and rewrote the history of Hong Kong films,” the fest said in a statement.

“He pioneered the Hong Kong New Wave in the 80s,” it said, transcending “times and genre to break new ground in Hong Kong cinema.”

This is the eighth year of the award.

Tsui’s 3D chopsocky epic “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” will be the first local movie to screen on Imax screens in China when it launches on Dec. 18.
