Sony scarer takes in $6.4 mil to best 'Sanctum'

A new pic about a scary roomie topped Friday’s box office.

Sony’s “The Roommate” grabbed the No. 1 position on Friday with about $6.4 million in 2,534 runs. The pic bested Universal’s latest, “Sanctum,” which collected about $3.5 million in 2,787 engagements.

Paramount’s romantic comedy “No Strings Attached” took the No. 3 spot in its third week, earning about $2.9 million in 3,050 runs. “The King’s Speech” collected about $2.3 million in 2,584 engagements.

Warner Bros. pic “The Rite” rounded out the top 5 with about $1.9 million from 2,985 engagements.

Sony’s Seth Rogen starrer “The Green Hornet” (3,033 runs) and CBS’ pic “The Mechanic” (2,704 runs) both earned about $1.8 million. Paramount’s “True Grit” took in about $1.4 million in 2,902 engagements, while Universal’s comedy “Dilemma” earned about $1.1 million in 2,545 runs. Critical darling “Black Swan” gave Fox Searchlight the No. 10 position with about $1 million in 1,977 runs.
