Exorcism pic takes in $5.1 mil to best "Strings"

The new Warner Bros. exorcism pic “The Rite” earned the top spot at the box office on Friday, besting Paramount’s “No Strings Attached,” last week’s winner.

“Rite” earned about $5.1 million in 2,985 engagements, while “Strings” took the second spot with about $4.4 million in 3,022 runs. New Jason Statham assassin thriller, “The Mechanic,” came in at No. 3 and earned CBS Films about $3.5 million in 2,703 engagements.

Sony’s 3D pic, “The Green Hornet,” grabbed the No. 4 spot with an estimate of $2.9 million in 3,524 runs. Rounding out the top five was “The King’s Speech,” which earned about $2.8 million in 2,557 engagements.

Paramount’s “True Grit” made about $1.9 million in 3,129 runs, while Universal’s “The Dilemma” earned about $1.7 million in 2,905 runs. Natalie Portman has a second pic in the top 10 for her Golden Globe-winning role in Fox Searchlight’s “Black Swan,” which earned about $1.4 million in 2,315 runs. Paramount’s “The Fighter” collected about $976,000 in 1,914 engagements.”Yogi Bear 3D” earned about $587,000 for Warner Bros.
