Sales mount on Segura’s Spanish hit ‘Torrente 4’

Offers for remake rights also on the table

Films Sans Frontieres has closed all rights to France on Santiago Segura’s “Torrente 4: Lethal Crisis.”

Inked Tuesday at Cannes by French distributor and sales agent FilmSharks Intl., pact is the biggest deal to date on the Spanish 3D gross-out blockbuster.

The licensing agreement also takes in all French-speaking Europe.

Planning a fall release, Paris’ Films Sans Frontieres has made a theatrical commitment of 80-100 prints, FilmSharks’ Guido Rud said, a significant rollout for a Spanish film.

In a second Croisette deal, Paris Filmes, one of the biggest indie distributors in Brazil, also took all rights to “Torrente 4” and the rest of the saga.

By Tuesday, offers were in for U.S., Germany, Mexico and Colombia with Japan now under negotiations Rud said, adding that Spain’s San Sebastian Festival has confirmed a special presentation of “Torrente 4.”

There are also offers on the table for Dutch and German remake rights.

Given escalating demand, FilmSharks has created a special department to handle remake business.

Italian, Korean and Mexican-Spanish remake rights on Argentina’s “A Boyfriend for My Wife” are under negotiations.

A Hollywood producer will shortly announce a remake deal on another Argentinean comedy, “Just Like Me.”

“Buyers prefer to buy a good film at a reasonable price from FilmSharks than a bad film with stars from the U.S.,” Rud said.
