Studios have set a pair of toons for summer 2013, with Fox staking out May 17 for “Leafmen” and Paramount scheduling DreamWorks Animation’s “Turbo” for July 19.
“Leafmen” is in production with Chris Wedge — co-founder and creative VP of Blue Sky Studios — directing the story about a colony of bugs, based on William Joyce book “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.” It will open against Sony’s Roland Emmerich actioner “Singularity.”
“Turbo,” with Ryan Reynolds voicing the lead role, is directed by David Soren from a script he co-wrote with Darren Lemke (“Shrek Forever After”). Story follows an ordinary garden snail who dreams of becoming the fastest snail in the world — and when a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo sets out to try to make his dream come true.
Lisa Stewart (“Monsters vs. Aliens”) is producing “Turbo,” slated to open against Universal’s Tom Cruise actioner “Oblivion.”
Two other animated projects have already been set for summer 2013: Disney’s “Monsters University” on June 21 and U’s “Despicable Me 2” on July 3.
