Germany: Box office saved by 3D blockbusters

Cannes 3D Report: Germany

While 2010 proved a disappointing year for German cinema, the power of 3D helped boost box office earnings thank to blockbusters like “Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Tangled.”

The 2010 box office was hit hard by a dearth of local product and the World Cup soccer tourney, which all left local cinemas largely vacant during the summer months.

While those factors contributed to a 13.5% drop in admissions to 126.6 million, 3D helped offset the downward trend, keeping the dip in box office revenue to only 5.7% for a E920.4 million ($1.34 billion).

Due to the 3D premium, the average ticket price continued to climb steadily, reaching $10.64 million last year compared $9.76 million in 2009 and $8.56 million in 2005.

Currently, 3D conversion among leading multiplex operators appears to be on track. Of the 4,700 cinema screens in Germany, 1,100 have been digitally upgraded and 65% of those are 3D capable.

In addition to a slew of major upcoming international 3D titles, this year will see more local 3D product than ever before, from Wim Wenders’ documentary “Pina” to “The Three Musketeers” and tyke actioner “Vicky and the Treasure of the Gods.”

Other 3D projects in the works include Detlev Buck’s adaptation of Daniel Kehlmann’s bestselling historical novel “Measuring the World.”
