Presidential prospect Tim Pawlenty chided his potential rival Donald Trump for bringing up the birther issue — the inference that President Obama was not born in the United States.
“I, for one, do not believe we should be raising that issue,” Pawlenty said on “Morning Joe,” per CNN. “I think President Obama was born in the United States.”
He may be sensing that the “issue” blew up in Trump’s face. The host of “The Apprentice” last week created a stir when he questioned whether Obama was born here and said that he should release his birth certificate, even though Hawaiian officials have done so. Trump released his own certificiate on Monday, but it’s not the official one.
The “birther” issue will come up again in the Republican primary, but just as candidates have used it to rile the base, Pawlenty and others will be able to use it to show that they are the serious contenders and separate themselves from the pack.
