Julianne Moore will portray Sarah Palin in HBO’s adapation of John Heilemann and Mark Halperin’s “Game Change.”

The project will come from the team behind “Recount,” HBO’s 2008 project on the contested presidential election in 2000. Jay Roach will direct and Danny Strong is writing the script, per Variety.

No word yet on others in the cast, but Moore originally was slated to portray Hillary Clinton in HBO’s “The Special Relationship,” about the partnership of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair during the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Hope Davis took the part.

Update: For the record, Moore donated $5,000 to the Democratic National Committee in 2008 and $2,500 in 2010.

While other casting has not been announced, Moore probably has the most unenviable tasks of the project, as she not only has to play Palin convincingly, but also beyond the Tina Fey caricature. As engaged as the electorate was in the 2008 election, the test will be whether the public is drawn to a replay of the race, albeit “Game Change” was about as compelling an electoral narrative as you are going to get. It’s a problem that seemed to bedevil Oliver Stone’s “W,” released in 2008 while George W. Bush was still president. The public’s attention was either focused elsewhere or would just as soon forget the earlier part of Dubya’s term.
