Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has picked up U.S. rights for Gareth Evans’ Indonesian actioner “The Raid” from Celluloid Nightmares. Deal was finalized during the Cannes Film Festival.
Evans, who lives in Jakarta, wrote and directed the project, which takes place in a hideout for the world’s most dangerous killers. Los Angeles-based production and sales outfit XYZ Films exec produced alongside producers Ario Sagantoro and PT Merantau Films.
Pic was also sold to multiple territories including Canada, the U.K., Australia, France, Germany and Japan.
“The Raid” is part of XYZ Films’ expansion into local-language production, which has included the Colombian film “Greetings to the Devil,” starring Edgar Ramirez (“Carlos”); the European production “Errors of the Human Body,” which recently wrapped in Dresden, Germany; and “Frankenstein’s Army,” set for production this fall in Prague.
Deal was negotiated by Nate Bolotin and Sarah Gabriel on behalf of Celluloid Nightmares and SPWA’s Scott Shooman and Dan Primozic.
