PARIS — German sales outfit Sola Media has closed a bevy of pre-sales on “Carlo’s Casino,” a 3D gag-ladden toon feature produced by Danish animation helmer-producer Thomas Borch Nielsen (“Sunshine Barry and the Disco Worms”).
Toon was picked up by Leda Films for Latin America, Kino Swiat for Poland and MD Entertainment for Indonesia, among other territories.
Danish shingle SF Film will release the toon pic in Denmark next summer.
Produced by Borch Nielsen’s newly launched animation shingle Nice Ninja, “Carlo’s Casino” is to be helmed by first-timer Jan Rahbek, who is co-writing with Borch Nielsen.
Toon was one of the highlights at Cartoon Movie in Lyon, where it was pitched by the producer.
Pic turns on Marco, a monkey who works as beach officer on a peaceful exotic island and dreams of solving a big crime. But Marco’s life gets shaken up when another monkey runs off with his girlfriend and builds a casino on the island. The pic will boast an original bossa nova score.
Borch Nielsen has reteamed with the creative team behind his last pic, “Sunshine Barry and the Disco Worms,” which world preemed at Toronto and was picked up in most major territories. It was a B.O. hit in various countries, notably in Denmark and Poland, where it outperformed U.S. animated tentpoles such as “Despicable Me.”
Borch Nielsen said the Copenhagen-based production house is building a transmedia strategy for “Carlo’s Casino.” The Euros 2.7 million ($3.7 million) toon will be adapted into mobile, web and video games.
Nice Ninja is also producing a spinoff series, “Marco Macaco,” which is repped by Sola and is set to air on DR in Denmark in April 2012, three months prior to “Carlo’s Casino’s” theatrical release.
Budgeted at approximately $4.1 million, “Marco Macaco” is a non-verbal slapstick comedy series comprising 52 5.5 minute episodes.
Sola is in advanced negotiations with a German broadcaster for the series.
