LONDON — Lovefilm, the European online film and TV subscription service akin to Netflix in the U.S., has appointed Nick James as its digital technical development director.

He will be responsible for the technical development of Lovefilm’s digital biz and will report to group digital officer Lesley Mackenzie.

James will work alongside Mackenzie on the technical co-ordination of new device platforms, building technology partnerships and further developing back office technical infrastructure.

He joins from media consultancy firm twocashew where, as an owner of the company, he headed up a team responsible for the specification of content management and new TV on-demand systems for clients in Blighty and Germany.

Prior to this, he led product development at Sky where he was responsible for the concept, design and delivery of products including Sky+, Sky+HD, Sky Sports Active and Sky News Active.

Lovefilm, which operates in Blighty, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany, has nearly 1.6 million members, and offers more than 70,000 titles to members through DVDs and digital streaming. In October, the service pacted with Sony, allowing PlayStation 3 users in Blighty to access Lovefilm content through their consoles.
