Lionsgate U.K. nabs ‘Professionals’

Indie partners with Callum McDougall, Richard Whelan

LONDON — Lionsgate U.K. has acquired the rights to produce a feature version of iconic Brit TV series “The Professionals,” which is expected to begin lensing in Blighty later this year.

The indie is partnering with Callum McDougall and Richard Whelan to produce the pic via their Eighth Wonder.

McDougall recently exec produced the last two James Bond pics — “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace” — and is currently on board Warner Bros.’ “Clash of the Titans” sequel. Whelan was associate producer on “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

The reboot of the 1970s crime series for the bigscreen will see ex-special ops mercenary Bodie and counter-terrorism detective Doyle return in an origin story that will follow their first mission together for covert British security unit CI5.

Originally created by Brian Clemens, the TV series was a cult hit when the first series aired on London Weekend Television in 1977.

Lionsgate U.K. CEO Zygi Kamasa said: “This production will combine the wit and fast-paced action of the original TV series, but also completely reinvent it for a new, modern audience.”
