Legendary Entertainment has tapped J. Martin Willhite as general counsel.
“We are fortunate to have Marty join our team at Legendary,” said Legendary chairman-CEO Thomas Tull to whom Willhite will report. “His extensive legal experience with entertainment, capital markets and financial transactions will benefit Legendary on a going forward basis.”
As a partner at Los Angeles-based law firm, Munger, Tolles & Olson, Willhite repped the William Morris Agency in the merger with Endeavor that formed WME in 2009. He also advised Spyglass Entertainment’s Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum on employment and equity ownership matters as they became co-chairmen and CEOs of MGM Studios and repped Reveille in all aspects of its $130 million sale to Shine.
Willhite also participated in the representation of the Chandler Trusts, the majority shareholder of the Times Mirror Corp., in the $8 billion sale of Times Mirror to the Tribune Co.
Willhite joins Legendary as the company is expanding the number of tentpoles it produces through a distribution deal with Warner Bros., broadens its biz into TV and comicbooks and sets up Legendary East in China.
