Robert Haymer, partner, O’Melveny & Myers

Dealmakers Impact Report 2011: Lawyers

On the mammoth Legendary East deal, Haymer provided the yin to colleague Stephen Scharf’s yang. He spearheaded the corporate, securities and joint venture end of the pact, which finds client Legendary making unprecedented inroads into the Chinese film world, while O’Melveny & Myers cohort Scharf took the reins on structuring the co-production end of the new venture.

“We’re just trying to bring the fanboy experience to China,” quips Haymer, a 24-year veteran of the firm. “There were a lot of moving parts and a lot of moving time zones.”

KEY DEALS: The former actor also hammered out a unique pact that brings AMC and Regal, the country’s two largest exhibitors, into the distribution sphere via newly formed venture Open Road. In addition, Haymer repped Peter Chernin in the creation of CA Media, an entertainment and technology company focused on Asia.

“Everyone’s looking to Asia,” says Haymer, son of journeyman thesp Johnny Haymer, best known for his stint on “MASH.” “Peter saw the opportunity there. It was really a matter of putting together the structure that was flexible enough for them to do multiple transactions in Asia and bring the seed money together.”

SPARE TIME: Biking along the coast.
