To the Victors, the Spoils: Lakers Hit Talk Circuit

Pau Gasol will be on “The Tonight Show” and Kobe Bryant will be on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Friday, as the Lakers hit the talk circuit in the wake of Thursday’s NBA title.

At this point, nobody seems particularly interested in what the Celtics have to say. Such is life.

Meanwhile, a brief note on “Nightline,” which followed the NBA game with one of the more disheartening half-hours the once-news program has produced.

KCAL-TV in Los Angeles used to air what was derisively called “The Sex News” after Lakers games, figuring a lot of strippers and models would get men to stay tuned.

Seemingly adopting that philosophy, the ABC program opened with a piece regarding porn stars, followed with a giddy Bill Weir piece about swimming with whale sharks, and closed with a viral video on young guys chugging bottles of Smirnoff ice.

Thank God there’s nothing more important going on in the world right now, like, say, a huge oil spill, with the CEO of BP getting reamed on Capitol Hill or something.

“A cautionary tale,” anchor Cynthia McFadden oozed after the porn piece.

Naw, “Nightline” blew past the caution flags on its descent from serious news into US Weekly-ville a long time ago.
