Update: Despite the endorsement from Larry King and a tie-in with the Huffington Post, Tony Robbins’ show tanked in its debut, with just over 3 million viewers. Apparently, the power of positive thinking only goes so far.
Larry King is known for his comically glowing quotes about movies (“‘All the King’s Men’ is a masterpiece. A magnificent cast. Sean Penn gives the performance of a lifetime”), but I haven’t seen him enlisted quite as often on behalf of television shows.
Still, here was his breathless take on “Breakthrough With Tony Robbins,” the new NBC reality show that premiered Tuesday, according to the ad that ran in Variety on Tuesday:
“Phenomenal … ‘Breakthrough’ is beyond imagination! Tony Robbins has created a television masterpiece. You will not touch the clicker! My wife and I couldn’t move — riveting, wonderful, inspiring and humbling!”
As much as I tend to believe him (about himself, if not his wife), that’s an awful lot of exclamation points for a guy who couldn’t move.
Never mind, by the way, that the majority of critics didn’t agree with King, at least if the poor ranking on Metacritic.com is any indication.
When it comes to providing an infomercial for the king of infomercials, Larry King delivered his own kind of masterpiece.
