Colbert’s Velvet-Gloved Shiv Skewers Ingraham

I sometimes wonder if the most rabid conservatives — even those with books to peddle — realize how stupid they’re going to look appearing on “The Colbert Report.”

For Laura Ingraham, anyway, the answer is “apparently not.”

In a riotous (if sometimes a little uncomfortable) interview, Stephen Colbert skewered her book as being terribly written and, in one instance, advancing “hideous, hackneyed racial stereotypes.”

The conservative talk host and frequent Fox News contributor’s response was feeble at best, though she did acknowledge that the Obama administration has been extremely good for the talkradio business and Fox News.

Colbert plays his character so artfully you sometimes miss how cleverly he can insert the knife. As I’ve said before, Jon Stewart’s show is consistently funnier, but Colbert’s ability to improv within character approaches a kind of genius.
