Network has given a script plus penalty order to the comedy, which comes from scribes Moses Port and David Guarascio (“Just Shoot Me”).
“Awkward Family Photos” is based on the website and book of the same name from Mike Bender and Doug Chernack. The book and site are exactly what it sounds like: A collection of the most unfortunate family photos imaginable.
“Awkward Family Photos” reps the latest TV project to be developed based on a web property; this year’s “$#*! My Dad Says,” of course, was inspired by a Twitter feed.
Sony Pictures TV, where EPs Guarascio and Port are based, will produce. Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are also on board to direct and exec produce, while Bender and Chernack will serve as non-writing exec producers.
Bender and Chernack began their “Awkward Family Photos” site after Bender spotted an awkward family photo on his wall. The popular website eventually led to a book, which was released in May.
“‘Awkward Family Photos’ reminds anyone with a dusty shoebox full of snapshots of unfortunate fashion choices, band trips, braces, bad bridesmaids’ dresses and that one time you got talked into dressing up and going to the Renaissance Faire, that you are not alone,” novelist Jennifer Weiner wrote in her Amazon.com review of the book. “This isn’t just a book, it’s a public service on the page, a living, breathing, laugh-out-loud reminder that no matter how badly you dressed, how oddly you posed, and how weird Uncle Dave who lived in the basement was, somebody out there had it worse. Particularly the girl on page 77.”
Guarascio and Port’s other credits include “Aliens in America” and the upcoming midseason series “Happy Endings,” in which they’ve served as consulting producers.
The busy Russo brothers are also exec producing “Happy Endings,” and are EPs on NBC’s “Community.” Their 2011 development roster includes Fox’s “Lawyers for Less.”
