Tasty ratings for Fox combo

'Hell's Kitchen,' 'Masterchef' top Tuesday

Fox has captured the first Tuesday of August in key demo categories behind its culinary combo of “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Masterchef.” Elsewhere, returning ABC reality series “Shaq Vs.” did OK in its tough hour, but CW’s new “18 to Life” didn’t.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, Fox opened the night a winner with “Hell’s Kitchen” (3.2/11 in 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall), which rose 10% week to week to win its hour by 2 shares in 18-49 over ABC’s formidable “Wipeout” (2.9/9 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall). It was followed at 9 p.m. by the second week of “Masterchef” (2.7/8 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall), which matched its week-ago premiere rating and scored a narrow 18-49 victory in one of the summer’s toughest time periods.

At ABC, “Wipeout” was followed at 9 p.m. by the season premiere of “Shaq Vs.” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 5.4 million viewers overall), which outperformed its modest deliveries of last summer to achieve series highs; it placed third among the broadcasters among young adults. And at 10, a repeat of “What Would You Do?” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) kept the lights on.

NBC opened quietly with new entry “Breakthrough with Tony Robbins” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall), which was down a tick from its weak debut of the previous week. The net picked up nicely from there, however, as a two-hour installment of “America’s Got Talent” averaged a potent 2.8/8 in 18-49 and 10.2 million viewers overall — winning its second hour across the board and standing as the night’s most-watched program overall.

CBS aired repeats of “NCIS” (1.4/5 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall) and “The Good Wife” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall).

And at CW, a repeat of new reality show “Plain Jane” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall) led into soft premiere numbers for Canadian comedy import “18 to Life” (0.4/1 in 18-49, 0.9 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.9/9; ABC, 2.1/6; NBC, 2.1/6; Univision, 1.6/5; CBS, 1.2/4; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: NBC, 7.7 million; CBS, 7.1 million; Fox, 6.5 million; ABC, 6.3 million; Univision, 4.1 million; CW, 1.1 million.
