Oxygen is joining the Jersey craze.
At the Television Critics Assn. confab in Pasadena on Sunday, NBC Universal cabler will announce it has greenlit reality series “Jersey Couture,” which looks to take advantage of the buzz surrounding MTV skein “The Jersey Shore.”
Produced by Magilla TV, series will spotlight a family that owns a formal wear shop that caters to the tux and gown crowd.
Bravo — also in the NBCU family — started the Jersey craze in April with “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” That was followed in November when Style announced “Jerseylicious,” which focuses on the romantic and business lives of six hair stylists at a beauty salon. Net will premiere the show March 21.
MTV has received huge amounts of publicity for “The Jersey Shore,” but much of it negative. The Italian-American community has complained that the cast is a stereotype of Italian culture and a few advertisers have pulled out as well.
