I’m certain that many of the people who complained that parts of last night’s live and unedited Oscar broadcast were long, tedious or stupid are the same people who complained that last month’s Winter Olympics weren’t shown live and unedited.

Don’t get me wrong: I do think parts of the Oscars were long, tedious and stupid, and I do want the Olympics shown live in primetime. And it’s not as if the two things are identical. But it wouldn’t surprise me if somewhere, NBC’s Dick Ebersol reads the reaction to the Oscarcast and chuckles.

It’s always struck me as a little odd that the length of the Oscarcast is an issue. It’s the biggest night of the year for films, and yet a lot of folks can’t wait to get it over with.
