‘Kitchen,’ ‘Masterchef’ heats up ratings

Fox cooking on Tuesday night

Fox came away with a Tuesday victory in key demo categories behind “Hell’s Kitchen” and the debut of competition series “Masterchef.” NBC, meanwhile, struck out with its launch of “Breakthrough with Tony Robbins.”

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Hell’s Kitchen” opened the night a winner for Fox (2.8/10 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall), followed by “Masterchef,” the net’s latest cooking show hosted by Gordon Ramsay. Fox notes that “Masterchef,” which led its 9 p.m. hour among adults 18-49, becomes summer’s top-rated series premiere in the demo.

NBC failed to break through in the night’s opening hour with self-help alternative series “Breakthrough with Tony Robbins” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall), which opened meekly and lost audience in its second half-hour — never a good sign for an 8 o’clock premiere. And that weakness seemed to affect “America’s Got Talent,” as the two-hour reality series hit summer lows (2.5/7 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall), falling to third place in 18-49 at 9 p.m. before surging to the timeslot lead at 10.

ABC hung in there with repeats of “Wipeout” at 8 (2.3/8 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) and 9 (2.3/7 in 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall) and an encore of newsmag “Primetime: What Would You Do?” at 10 (1.5/5 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall).

And CBS again did little on the night, rating fifth among the broadcasters in adults 18-49, with repeats of its in-season lineup of “NCIS” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 10.0 million viewers overall), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) and “The Good Wife” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall). “NCIS” was, however, Tuesday’s most-watched program overall.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.8/9; ABC, 2.0/6; NBC, 1.9/6; Univision, 1.6/5; CBS, 1.2/4; CW, 0.3/1.

In total viewers: NBC, 7.4 million; CBS, 7.2 million; ABC, 6.1 million; Fox, 6.0 million; Univision, 4.0 million; CW, 0.8 million.
