‘Dance’ down, but Fox takes night

CBS' 'Big Brother' meanwhile is the night's top performer

Fox prevailed in key demos on Thursday behind the season finale of “So You Think You Can Dance,” though it was down sharply from its year-ago conclusion. CBS remained hot with “Big Brother,” the night’s top-rated show.

(Note that numbers for all nets are subject to revision due to the start of preseason NFL telecasts on local stations, which inflated numbers in some markets. The Saints aired on the Fox station in New Orleans, for example, while the Cowboys and Patriots were among the teams playing on CBS affiliates.)

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “So You Think You Can Dance” averaged a 2.4 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 and 7.2 million viewers overall, placing second to “Big Brother” in its first hour and then dominating from 9 to 10. Still, it looks to have tumbled by at least 25% vs. last summer’s finale and by nearly 10% vs. its first fall season’s finale of last year.

The Eye net’s “Big Brother” controlled the 8 o’clock hour (2.6/9 in 18-49, 7.9 million viewers overall), rising week to week. It was followed by repeats of “CSI” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall) and “The Mentalist” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall).

ABC hung in there with a repeat of “Wipeout” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall), followed by original episodes of drama “Rookie Blue” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall) and newsmag “Boston Med” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall).

NBC struggled with encores of “Community” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall), “30 Rock” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall), “The Office” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall), “Parks and Recreation” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.4/8; CBS, 2.0/6; Univision, 1.7/5; ABC, 1.5/5; NBC, 1.2/4; CW, 0.6/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 7.9 million; Fox, 7.2 million; ABC, 5.7 million; Univision, 4.1 million; NBC, 3.2 million; CW, 1.4 million.
