CBS tops Thursday primetime

'Big Brother' generates more strong numbers

With “Big Brother” generating more strong numbers, and repeats of its crime dramas fairing well enough, CBS captured Thursday’s primetime ratings race among the broadcast networks.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Big Brother” dominated the 8 o’clock hour with a 2.7 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 8.2 million viewers overall, up vs. last week; on Wednesday of this week, the show drew its highest rating among adults 18-34 for an episode on any night in three years. The reality vet was followed by repeats of “CSI” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall) and “The Mentalist” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall), with the latter topping its broadcast competition at 10 o’clock.

ABC opened with solid numbers for a repeat of “Wipeout” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall) and an original “Rookie Blue” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall) before dropping off with its “Nightline in Primetime” news special (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall).

Fox aired repeats of “Bones” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall) and “Fringe” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall).

And NBC continues to do little on Thursday nights this summer, settling for just 3% of the 18-49 viewing audience with encores of “Community” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall), “30 Rock” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall), “The Office” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall), a second “Community” at 9:30 p.m. (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall) and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall).

Early numbers weren’t available for ESPN’s coverage of the preseason NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts, but it likely helped the cable net win the night in key demo categories.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 1.9/6; Univision, 1.7/5; ABC, 1.6/5; Fox, 1.1/3; NBC, 0.9/3; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 7.3 million; ABC, 5.6 million; Univision, 4.1 million; Fox, 3.5 million; NBC, 2.9 million; CW, 1.5 million.
