CBS originals dominate Thursday

CW comes in strong with 'Vampire Diaries'

On a night when the top ABC and NBC programs aired repeats, CBS ruled the ratings race behind potent performances by “Survivor,” “CSI” and “The Mentalist.” It was also a good night for CW’s “Vampire Diaries,” which grew nicely.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Survivor” got the night off to a winning start for CBS, growing vs. the previous week and standing as Thursday’s top draw in both adults 18-49 (3.7/12) and total viewers (12.2 million). It was followed by “CSI” (3.5/10 in 18-49, 15.0 million viewers overall) and “The Mentalist” (3.5/10 in 18-49, 16.1 million viewers overall), which were back in their regular slots one week after producing lower ratings with special airings in each other’s time periods.

Fox’s drama combo of “Bones” (2.7/9 in 18-49, 9.8 million viewers overall) and “Fringe” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall) earned a second-place finish on the night, each building vs. the previous week, which was their first time airing original episodes on the same night in two months.

NBC didn’t do much with its repeats of comedies “Community” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall), “Parks and Recreation” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall), “The Office” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) and “30 Rock” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall) but picked up some at 10 p.m. with an original episode of “The Marriage Ref” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall); in part due to a weaker lead-in, “Ref” hit a series low.

ABC, which tied CW for fourth on the night in 18-49, was led by 8 o’clock firstrun drama “FlashForward” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 5.4 million viewers overall), which grew a tick week to week. It was followed by encores of the net’s serialized medical dramas “Grey’s Anatomy” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) and “Grey’s Anatomy” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall).

At CW, “The Vampire Diaries” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) placed third for its 8 o’clock hour in 18-49 and 18-34 (1.8/6) while moving to the timeslot lead in its core demo of females 12-34 (2.5/9) — rising week-to-week by double-digit percentages across the board. “Supernatural” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) followed with slight gains week to week.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 3.6/11; Fox, 2.5/8; NBC, 1.7/5; ABC, 1.4/4; CW, 1.4/4; Univision, 1.3/4.

In total viewers: CBS, 14.4 million; Fox, 8.1 million; ABC, 4.6 million; NBC, 4.0 million; Univision, 3.3 million; CW, 3.1 million.
