ABC’s scripted, gamey, newsy summer schedule

Wipeout-set-3
ABC unveiled an original-heavy summer sked on Wednesday, highlighted by scripted originals on Sunday and Thursday nights.

New drama “The Gates,” about a creepy mountain community, will air Sundays at 9 p.m. starting June 20 (in the “Desperate Housewives” slot — trading one strange suburb for another). Also that night at 10 p.m., the comedy/drama “Scoundrels” launches.

Like “Brothers and Sisters” — the show it will replace during the summer months — “Scoundrels” is about a dysfunctional family.

ABC’s other summer drama, “Rookie Blue” (formerly “Copper”), bows later that week, June 24, at 9 p.m.

“Rookie” centers on five new cops straight out of the police academy.

Alphabet is launching all three dramas early in the summer, in order to take full marketing advantage of its season finales and the NBA Finals.

Returning reality entries include “The Bachelorette,” which launches on Monday, May 24 at 9 p.m., before sliding down to its normal 8 p.m. slot the following week, May 31.

Also on May 31, the second season of Tyra Banks’ and Ashton Kutcher’s “True Beauty” will bow, at 10 p.m., behind “The Bachelorette.”

The next night, the two-hour return of “Wipeout” airs at 8 p.m. Show will then take an NBA break and return with its regular premiere on Tuesday, June 22 at 8 p.m.

Newcomer “Downfall,” yet another primetime game show, launches the following week on Tuesday, June 29 at 9 p.m., behind “Wipeout.”

ABC’s second wave of reality shows then commences on Monday, August 9, as “The Bachelor” spinoff “Bachelor Pad” takes over at 8 p.m. The second season of “Dating in the Dark” also returns that night, at 10 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 9 p.m., Shaquille O’Neal’s “Shaq Vs.” returns for season two.

ABC News is also busy this summer, with several productions set to launch — starting with “Boston Med,” which will air Thursdays at 10 p.m. (in the “Private Practice” slot) starting June 24. When that show is completed, ABC News’ “Head Cases” will take over the slot starting Aug. 19.

“Primetime: Mind Games” — a five-episode series looking at real-life, twisted cases — airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting July 20. And “Primetime: Crime” fills that slot starting Aug. 24.
