NBC greenlights two pilots

Network gives go-ahead to 'Cape,' 'Outsourced'

NBC has given greenlights to two pilots, both from sibling Universal Media Studios.

Among them is hourlong “The Cape,” which comes from Universal and BermanBraun. Written by Thomas Wheeler, drama focuses on a former cop who is set up as a criminal and decides to become a masked hero to clear his name and reunite with his son.

NBC also picked up “Outsourced,” written by Robert Borden (“The Drew Carey Show,” “The George Lopez Show”). Comedy tells the tale of a demoted novelty company manager who is sent to India to manage a motley crew of customer service reps.

Based on the independent movie of the same name, “Outsourced” has been in development at NBC for more than two years (Daily Variety, Oct. 7, 2007), under the guidance of twice-Emmy-nommed director Ken Kwapis, who helmed the pilot of the American version of “The Office.” George Wing and John Jeffcoat wrote the film. Exec producers on the pilot are Tom Gorai and David Skinner.

On the cable side, FX will shoot a pilot presentation of half-hour comedy “Sweat Shop” in February.

Laffer, about a stepbrother and sister who run a strip-mall gym in Scottsdale, Ariz., is a co-prod of FX Prods. and Lionsgate. Creator Pell James will star and exec produce along with Thomas Moffett, Braxton Pope and Jonas Pate, who will direct the pilot.

Net recently found excellent traction with toon comedy “Archer” and is set to debut “Louie” — sitcom based on the standup of Louie C.K. — in April.
