Lionsgate nabs Mediaset shows

Studio looks overseas for next TV hit

Lionsgate, high on the success of “Mad Men,” is turning to Europe for what it hopes will be two more hits in the U.S. market.

The studio has nabbed format rights to a pair of properties from Italy’s Mediaset — action-adventure series “Intelligence” and one-hour dramedy “Girlfriends.”

The pact is the first of its kind between Lionsgate and Silvio Berlusconi’s Mediaset, and could be the forerunner of other collaborations.

“Intelligence,” which bowed in Italy on Canale 5 last year, is a spy thriller with a global angle.

“Girlfriends” launched on Canale 5 in 2008 and revolves around four single thirtysomething women who become acquainted after meeting in a gynecologist’s office.

Raul Mateu, through Fluent Media Group, is attached to both series as an exec producer.

“As our television business continues to expand, we’re always on the lookout for international formats with exciting franchise potential,” Lionsgate television group prexy Kevin Beggs said. “We believe both series could have broad-based appeal in the U.S.”

Gonzalo Cilley and his company Resonant brokered the deal on behalf of Mediaset, which is represented by ICM.
