Disney’s Spain reign at Mipcom

Studio splitting content in region, extends Asia pact

Disney has redrawn its map of Spain, splitting content between commercial webs Antena 3 and Telecinco, and extended its pay TV pact in Asia, in deals announced at Mipcom on Monday.

Disney inked an exclusive, free-to-air first-run movie deal with Antena 3 while Telecinco will get library pics and series from ABC Studios and ABC Family.

In Spain, Disney previously had a split deal on movies with Antena 3 and pubcaster TVE and with Cuatro for series and library movies. But those are about to expire.

“Antena 3 and Telecinco are the two strongest players in Spain: We have split our output between the two, according to their programming strategies,” said Simon Amselem, Walt Disney country manager for Spain and Portugal.

Kicking in early 2011, the Antena 3 pact includes “Toy Story 3,” “Tron: Legacy,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Hannah Montana: The Movie.” Deal is likely to run between three and five years.

The April analog switch-off in Spain, market fragmentation and new digital channels have revolutionized the Spanish TV landscape. Big players such as Antena 3 need to lock in weighty content to drive traffic to their core channels.

Meanwhile, Disney Media Distribution and Fox Intl. Channels have extended their multi-year agreement for first-run Disney films on pay TV in Asia via Star Movies and Fox Family Movies.

The webs will air films from Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Feature Animation, Pixar, DreamWorks and Marvel for subscribers in 13 Asian markets.

Disney Media Distribution also announced international licensing agreements for ABC Studios family action-adventure series “No Ordinary Family.”

The first season of the show, starring Michael Chiklis, has been picked up in Asia Pacific by ABS-CBN (the Philippines), Channel Seven (Australia), Media Prima (Malaysia), SingTel mio TV (Singapore), TVNZ (New Zealand), Zee Network (India), Cuatro (Spain), Fox (Italy), Mediaset (Italy) and UKTV in Blighty. Sony Entertainment Television has licensed the series in Latin America.
